I honestly don't see this as a huge deal..
In the 1st quarter of 2023 ford sold 11,000 electric vehicles... tesla sold 181,000 so ford will add 10% to the user pool.. not a huge hit.

And Superchargers may be used as a backup plan by Ford owners when EA does not exist or disappoints. That is if there is noticeable electricity rate difference between the two. That is probably what I would do just to keep EA in business. If EA crapshoot gets really bad however, I may pay the extra and go for supercharger by default.

As a 2013 owner I have seen long lines at stations now. Also limited time on station now. As an old owner, I don't like the idea given the current number of chargers in populated towns.
Yes it's money for Tesla, but bad for us. Add 10,000 chargers might help.

Been thinking on this, and, while it’s stating the obvious it’s still wild once it sinks in that in only ~6 months Ford EVs will be pulling into Tesla stations with a working adaptor for supercharging.

While the news about Ford transitioning to built-in Tesla charge ports in 2025 is huge and obvious, at least for me it took some sinking in to realize that 95% of the ‘solution’ is actually coming with the arrival of the adaptor, and in only ~6mo

Especially once one realizes that after 2025, Ford owners will just be driving around instead with an adaptor for CCS

Perhaps, but why bother? CCS1 may be joining CHAdeMO and the Dodo. You'd have to save a lot in charger fees to make up for the cost of a CCS1 adapter, and then there's the frustration...

The more I think about this, the more I think this is about keeping Tesla Charging ports and the Tesla charging system AS IS! Elon dropped a hint that he had gone to Europe and TRIED to get them to realize the Tesla port and charging connections were BETTER. It didn't work!!! Europe forced Tesla to change all Tesla's and their superchargers to CCS.

So Ford has a lot to gain from this, But so does Tesla! Elon has a plan. He is hoping to keep the Tesla connectors alive in the US. Currently, if you are moving to Europe. People advise selling your Tesla in the states and buying a European Tesla over there. It's a mess, and Elon isn't happy about it, I'd bet.

As someone who has installed DC chargers I can say for sure that in lots of cases and perhaps most, the ground that EA chargers set on is leased and not owned.

and it’s a fun idea, even if there are a few roadblocks to it being more than an idea.

But this deal between Tesla and Ford does begin to create a situation where more things are possible. For example, probably becomes one step closer to tesla being able to strike deals with let’s say a retailer like Walmart.

Maybe Walmart isn’t the best example, but conceptually, that a lot of retailers, who may not have previously considered a Tesla only installation, might at least put it on their whiteboard if it’s Tesla and Ford. Add General Motors, and your lease terms start looking better and better to a broader range of retailers.

I wonder if the Ford EV software needs modification or it is just FordPass app and how involved Tesla will be in the modifications needed. Superchargers have been reliable in a closed system. Ford software team is subpar (putting it mildly) and the EV itself is not designed by Tesla. It will be interesting to see how easy and reliable the experience will be.

I don’t want Tesla doing anything that will bring the scrutiny of the anti-trust regulators. Buying competitors certainly will.
