I don't understand the above? If Rivian or similar configured backed in then they would still be taking up 2 stalls (ie. a Tesla couldn't charge there.

The photo you’ve posted is from a backing-in SC, the photo I posted is from a pull-through SC…?

Of course, I said if they backed in and charged in their driver/left front then a Tesla could not charge in its driver/left rear next to them for the exact same reason. The Rivian would be using its charging cord (ala from the "wrong" pedestal).
What am I missing?

The Rivian could pull in (partially) facing to the left (in your picture above) and use the charger on it's left. It would be sticking out quite a ways into the parking lot, but still not blocking any stalls.

I must be missing something.

My mocked-up picture IS with the Rivian backed in. Their front left is plugged in.

The Tesla next to it pulled straight in and can then not use the rear left.

One side note on SC tightness.

One SC we stopped at in Blanding Utah was very small, just 4 chargers in the parking lot next to the visitors center. We actually had trouble backing into the middle spot (only one available) because a tourist with an RV had parked sideways in front of them leaving only about 10 feet of space.

I didn't get a picture for some reason but here is a google maps screenshot where you can see it's a common occurrence, and actually a "valid" parking space!!!!

(I should probably lodge a complaint with Tesla).

These quibbles is why I propose an extremely novel arrangement, which may experience some pushback at first but I think will eventually catch on:

there’s an island, which vehicles can approach from either direction, on either side, with 2 sets of chargers spaced about 15’ apart along the length of the island, each of the 2 charger sets have 2 charger cables that can simultaneously service either side of the island - serving up to 4 cars at a time. A station could have multiples of these islands

that way, people can pull though forward or backwards, even with a trailer wouldn’t block any other charger, and ingress/egress is super easy

I’ve put together a little visual, in case helpful:

* My current EV uses those ... to clean the windshield (but then I'm guilted into buying a drink).

* Works OK for 5ish minute fill-ups as vehicles cycle in and out promptly.
* BUT uses a LOT of square footage of sometimes expensive real estate.
* Calc the square footage used per "pedestal" --- seriously that is the obvious problem.

There is 40 pedestals in this small footprint:
yeah no doubt the constraint(s) that lead to present designs

but the present designs weren’t intended to sufficiently accommodate all these vehicle variables

and as you try and expand market, and convert ICE to BEV

eg, you can’t hope to convert ICE pickup drivers by selling impressive towing capabilities but then require people to unhook their RV each time they want to charge (or instead block 10 stalls to charge, etc)

The times I have used the local supercharger all but one time it’s always been 20-30 minute wait…examples. We don’t need more door space, we need more stations!

it just gets you to the chargers, you decide which one is open….so far.
@fritter63, @Crissa may have been referring to the Tesla navigation system will no redirect you to less busy Superchargers automatically if you put them in the Navigation system. I've had this happen last year. I ended up overriding it because I wanted a specific route.

Also both the in-car system was changed in the past year or so to show how busy (bar chart) a given station is (ie. you can watch it over 10-15 minutes to see if the X out of X number ever drops for more than a minute -- cars swapping).

Also the phone app added a "bar chart" of how busy a given station is and show if the current usage is out of norms.

@LoneWolfO6, was that picture from a holiday? What supercharger?

...And Tesla plans to use the navigation software to manage queues, so they don't have to buy pavement.

My navigation software recommended navigating to a less crowded supercharger on June 13. I ignored the recommendation and arrived at the Colby, KS (I-70) Supercharger and there were only 2 of the 8 chargers in use. The little red Supercharger icon on my map agreed the entire time with the availability of 6 chargers.

i think Tesla just designed the current charging stations to be as quick and as inexpensive to build as practical.

Now as we enter the truck era, I am guessing a far larger % of future locations will be built to suit larger vehicles.

We now have 5000 locations, when we get to 50,000 , maybe 35,000 will have easier access, those with larger vehicles will have a choice.
