It's over the air, but... this also seems petty. I'm pretty sure all my manual transmission cars don't chime when I get back into them after leaving them idling until reaching the speed level. In fact... I know my mom's Mazda 5 doesn't, and it's an automatic.

Like almost all of the recent Tesla “Recalls” though, it’s not very concerning.

The auto media will of course write a story about how Tesla is “Plagued” with recalls lately.

Is there a state the car is in that is the equivalent to “started”? Is it considered “started” after the initiating brake pedal press?

Well, there's a park mode and a drive mode, and that's probably what they're saying: That because you can just step and go, it should chime right away. The chime is supposed to happen as you shift into drive.

I do agree that sooner is better than later. But it's a weird recall. They're not demanding this from, say, Mazda, despite it being linked to the button-press not the pedal-press.

my phone had an update last weekend and I didn't get the recall notice.

As a society, we’ve got to come up with another term to use for this kind of auto update “fix”. It’s confusing at best to have the term recall mean both:
  1. A notice of a hazard that requires me to take action for my own safety or benefit. Said action needs to be planned, scheduled, and will disrupt my routine. Inaction could result in harm to me or my family.
  2. A notice of something I have no control or influence over but should probably be told about so I’m aware that my safety or benefit has been protected without any action or attention on my part. If I happen to notice the change, at least I’ll know why the change was made. But in the meantime, carry on as normal. Just know that we are trying to make things better.
Really, when it comes down to it. I want to be notified in both cases. But if you are going to notify my in case 2, I need to know there is no reason to worry or to disrupt my life. Don’t make me read past the title/subject to distinguish between the two cases.

These recalls are only supposed to be for things which are life and limb hazards.

A chime that sounds a little later or a stereo that's louder do not rise to this level,

It's selective and capricious.

You appear to want your fun more than **even being told** about safety. I'm glad there's a National Transportation Safety Board, National Highway Transportation Administration and other assorted Nanny State/Fun Police. You know... things like " Save lives, prevent injuries, reduce vehicle-related crashes". Do they have false-positives? Are they stuck in a bureaucracy? Are they slow to adapt? yes, yes, yes. Would the roads be more dangerous without them? yes.

Perhaps I wasn’t clear what I was talking about. I said above they should fix the chime.

I was not talking about the seatbelt chime, I was referring to the Boombox recall which the NHTSA said explicitly was NOT actually a safety hazard, but should be recalled regardless.

I also don‘t think I suggested we should eliminate the NHTSA. There is some overly zealous staff members there who should probably be spending time on “Safety” rather than chasing issues they themselves admit is not a safety issue.

The thing is, in spite of the headlines, I don’t think the fart horn was specifically recalled. Just the ice-cream truck and coconut sounds at slow speed. The fart horn might go with it, but it was the slow speed driving noises that caused the recall.

Problem is the selective nature of the recall. It applies to Tesla but no one else. The point of the pedestrian warning sound was electric vehicles were not loud enough to detect at low speeds. Tesla made it louder, they get recalled. Does this mean then gas vehicles which have the windows open and the radio loud need to limit the radio because if its too loud pedestrians will not hear the gas engine hum so pedestrians won't know the car is on and moving.

We are talking about pedestrian safety here and if playing music (aka boombox) over the sound of the engine (or its artificial sound in electric motor) is a danger to pedestrians then apply it to all cars. I would love to see the lawsuit where every ford/gm/stelantis/vw has to be recalled to address this safety concern.

I saw an article about how Tesla had to recall a million cars due to a "seatbelt malfunction". Sounds scary!

I'm sorry if I missed something. I looked back for boombox, audio, and/or other things and I didn't find anything. Was this a different thread? Am I missing something obvious?
