Not a huge fan of this sort of video. I personally see their videos as an extension of their business, and as advertising for their business. If it doesn't make financial sense to tear down a vehicle on the business side they shouldn't do it.

I would assume the costs of breaking down a video for reports is baked into their business model since it is one of the products they offer. They likely would not do it if they didn't make money on it.

That said, I am fine that they are selling merchandise, I just think this video was a bit much.

But maybe I am just a little cranky this morning.

I am all for it. In fact, it is going to cost me close to 65k for my CT with FSD and tax. I will be posting on this site my personal experiences with the CT and with that would like YOUR support for the content and sarcasm I will be adding to COC.

All video's will be exclusively handled by @greggertruck at a cost

Agreed. This video was really weird. Like, who knew a business required money. No way /s.

Haven't they been in business for 20+ years? What did they do before getting people to front them? It's crazy because even if no one bought their shit, you 100% know they'd get a loan to tear down that Cybertruck, lol. The YouTube views and auctioning off of those batteries/parts alone would probably pay for almost the entire thing.

This seems more like Munro wanting to avoid getting a bank loan. Nothing wrong with that, especially if you can get others to pay for your business endeavor. I would do it, but I'd want a piece of the profit, lol.

I'm confused by this. They built a successful business around reverse engineering and costing vehicles and did it without a YouTube audience.
Why is the Cybertruck any different than those other vehicles? It can't be the cost because they tore down at least one Rivian previously.

I think you fundamentally misunderstand how businesses operate.

If he doesn't fund this, his business will whither and die. We will get no more videos. Getting venture funding is completely normal to how businesses operate. You need the money before you can make the product to sell.

Venture capital is currently very low - because of the high interest rates, your business venture needs to exceed just buying government bonds (after risk is included) to even be considered for funding. That's why the NASDAQ is bearish right now.

Potentially there is a huge difference. From what I understand, before the YT channel companies would bring him a vehicle they wanted to investigate, fund the teardown and buy the report. Notice that in this case, the contract would include $$ (at least a portion of it) up front. This would allow him to start paying the engineers from the get-go. If it was a super-secret project, they might even require full payment up front.

In the CT case, they are in a race with some other companies to do the first tear-down and get the videos out. But they have already told us that they would buy the CT from anyone who had an early enough pre-order. So they have to come up with the funds for the vehicle and the engineer pay before they can even create a single video to put on YT. And YT isn't paying nearly as much as it used to so I doubt our views will be enough to pay the engineers for their work.

It seems like the YT channel was a good idea but the business model circumstances have changed enough that there needs to be a new funding model.

Potentially, there might be a company that wants to pay for the teardown and full report. But I doubt legacy auto has the cash for that at the moment so timing would probably be an issue with that.

Let me reiterate, I don't care that they are selling merchandise. That does not bother me one bit. The tone and the whole "would you do that" part of video is what I don't personally care for. No, I wouldn't do that. But I am not in the business of doing that. They are in the business of tearing vehicles down and documenting their findings though.

I do not understand their business plan specifically, I have zero insight into it. As others have said, maybe prior to youtube they relied on another manufacturer to provide the vehicle as part of the contract. Them selling something to raise funds isn't why I disliked it, its how it was presented.

If the video has simply been about them selling merch I wouldn't have commented on it at all. I just found this video to be off-putting.
