I don't choose poison administered by autocrats where I have no choice and no alternative. Government is a monopoly. Freedom is better. Choice is better. Free people deciding on their own is better. Not perfect, but better than autocratic control. So I choose freedom and the negative consequences that come along with freedom.
You kind of need to vote with your feet. If you don't like a government telling you what to do, there is a Utopian Libertarian society you can move to. And property costs in Somalia make moving there affordable for anyone!!!

Small, limited government that has a simple and moral rule of law - that's the right formula. We used to have that formula. The problem is so many people have been brainwashed to think that big government can solve all our problems. The reality is big government is oppressive and the end result is North Korea. Why don't you vote with your feet and move there?

The rise of big corporations and the power they have needs to be balanced by something. Only government can do that.

I'm sure you're loving your free market charging for non-Tesla EVs right now. Your free market roads. Your free market safety systems...

-Crissa
Safety systems reduce our risk of injury and death. But they also make things less fun. Personally I like taking some risks, and doing some stupid things because it is fun. Exciting. If I want to be perfectly safe, I will wrap myself in bubble wrap and watch TV all day. I guess you want government to mandate that?

I would rather ride down a trial on my mountain bike at high speed, risking injury and more. Well, because I Iove doing it. You can wrap yourself in bubble wrap and be safe and happy. Just don't vote for people who make me do it.

That is absolutely false.

Big corporations have power because of big government. If the laws are structured so that every business can fairly compete, big business will have competition that will keep them in check. And individuals, like you and me, will absolutely keep them in check with how we spend our own money.

The only reason big corporations have power is because of the massive regulations that government creates that only they have the capability to manage and overcome.

Asking myself *when* this was the case was my route to wisdom.

When, exactly, were the good old days? And for whom?

Were all Americans from all racial and ethnic groups included at that time? And, of not, where those really the good old days?

I didn't like the answers I got, but they were much more useful than wishful thinking about a past that never was.

When your risky behavior results in a broken leg, will you:
  1. Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps and walk home
  2. Wait for the government to come rescue you off the mountain for free
  3. Let the government rescue you, and happily pay the $200,000 bill from the search-and-rescue team

What makes you think the government in North Korea is big?

You do understand this is gibberish, right? And off topic?

We used to have higher mortality. We used to have old people dying on the streets. We used to have people dying of unclean water, and we still have people suffering from poor air quality. We used to have more crime, we used to have unsafe food.

Per capita, we have far fewer government employees. Heck, the state with the most per capita is Wyoming, not exactly a state with great social services.

Anyhow, this is a truck forum, and we're talking about safety regulations and the ability to be secure that we can charge our trucks after we drive down our government-provided roads.

-Crissa

And yeah, I think we should be able to take risks. It's not government stopping you from barreling down a private hill on your bicycle.

Item 1. I have crashed before - no broken leg but a broken bike. I didn't wait for help. If I couldn't move, I would call my wife.

The improvements in society, and there have been many, have not occurred because government has raised taxes, regulated more and mandated more. If you think government is the cause, I cannot help you. There is no logic or reason that will work. In fact, an immoral government that has monopoly power over our lives is way more frightening than one immoral neighbor who has no power over me.

What makes you think the government in North Korea is big?

The "big government" I am referring to is government that has big taxes and many regulations. If they are doing it with fewer people, it just means they are more efficient than they used to be. North Korea controls everything about each individual, and it is horrible. I guess you must like how well they are doing things over there with no freedoms and total control by the experts. They sure have created a Utopia.

You are attributing some improvements in our society to a government that taxes more and regulates more than it used to. In fact, there are many examples of government causing problems in our society, making things a lot worse than it would have been without government involvement. I could provide those examples but they are commonly known. Probably you don't know about them, for some reason, but many people do.

I agree about one thing however: this is a car forum, and I have strayed way too far away from what we should be discussing.

Even though we disagree about government, I hope we can still civilly discuss the Cybertruck and our admiration for what it hopefully will be when released. So if you want to keep taking about government, we should do it over DM. I think the administrator is probably ready to lock this thread if we don't stop. So I am stopping.

Hope everyone has a great night.
