I think it will take a few more years before self-driving features are safer/better than humans, but I would not see a human reacting any differently to a blacked-out truck with no lights in the middle of the road at night.

Hopefully they will investigate and improve, but I wouldn't call it "pretty worrying".

In fact, I think the headline here should be "Man walks away from a 75 mph crash on the freeway".

Another reason why I despise dark-colored vehicles, especially black, they absorb light and don't reflect much.

I live in the country, think two-lane roads and lots of trees, wanna guess which cars are hard to spot without lights on even though they should be, wanna guess which cars stand out against the background quicker? White paint is easier to maintain and does not scream for a car wash, yep I am lazy and safe.

Hey, have you ever wondered why birds in Canada like crows, ravens and many others are dark, as opposed to birds from Australia and South America, which are so colorful? Simply, they would die of cold here in the winter if they did not have "solar power". The expression of "shivering crows" is well understood in cold climates.

Darker vehicles seems not to rust as fast as white vehicles here in Quebec. If you live in California or Texas I would use the opposite logic with the color to favor light vehicles.
Now, I once heard an argument that in very hot Arab countries where men were the long " thobe?" some say it is better to have a light colored one, while some others indicate a darker one would create a "chimney" effect that vent to extreme heat up. It's mostly about physics in my mind

I'm slightly surprised the Tesla cam didn't pick it up. I thought they use fairly high dynamic range and high sensitivity cameras for night driving. Still, its incredible the driver walked away!

Makes me wonder about the camera capabilities in general. I wonder how big the sensors are and whether this kind of situation would merit using larger sensors. A good camera can see in the dark far better than the human eye but it takes a fairly large sensor and quality lense (big aperture).

No lights, no reflectors, over-driving the headlights.

No human would have done better.

Road strategy is the only defense there: drive so you can see the other vehicles' headlights wash your lane rather than being in the passing lane while not passing.
