Fundamental first principles that metric has the ring of truth. That spun-up a disconnect between purchase price and $/seat a.k.a. eyeballs.

Forty Bn is not chump change for a man set on burning a runway all the way to Mars. He can’t afford to blow it before he lands his coup de grâce.

SO that m**********r is aiming for Zuck, Meta and turning Twitter into the bitchinest cyber AI crypto integrated real life EDC platform ever rolled into a handheld device. A device that will have instantaneous SAT comms, terrestrial LTE and WiFi bouncing off SpaceBees faster than any M1 chip Apple subsequently churns over and over and over…

Grok’d Elon’s got a plan, a scale and weighed the limiting factors to successfully changing the world one dent in the universe at a time. Be damn! I am.
Puff puff pass.

Elon - Free speech is not something you can control one way or another. Concentrate on your good works on the electrification of everything and advancing technology. Leave social science to someone else.

Please.

There's just one problem - no society = no need to electrify anything. The natural world, without humans, needs none of that electrification whatsoever.

If all problems originate in the hearts and minds of mankind, then what must be done first? With what values should we make change occur for the better, with real tangible common values, if we can't even accept anothers perspective, nor distinguish our own from our culturally embedded herd mind?

If you watch EMs latest Ted talk below, you will see that he is highly motivated to seek the truth. In that mission, he will wield whatever power he has to find it, even at a great personal cost. This is easily illustrated by his many achievements and successes in the face of great adversery.

He actually clearly articulates in the TED talk that he was forced by the SEC to say that he didn't have the funding secured to take Tesla private, even though 8n reality he had the funding secured. He also openly says that Tesla was the victim of the biggest short in the history of the market, in an effort to make Tesla fail. This all stems from the same group of interests that are afraid of losing control and have intentionally inhibited change from fossils in an attempt to retain control, simply because fossil derived energy can be measured and charged for at the tap. The same groups that have infiltrated media, lobbying, bureaucracy and even the legal systems and global governments that resist change, either by malice or ignorance. This is the reality us "commoners are now slowly getting glimpses of.

We can be the victims of change, by turning a blind eye to it, or the architects of it, by understanding the intricacies of those realities and shaping them with it. Such is the nature of change.

In order to control FUD and disinformation you have to control free speech. Sure you might make an algorithm or a ranking system that self regulates and positions the information in a transparent fashion such that it is not skewed to the crazy talk, but that goes against the media model of click based marketing, also boring. This might kill Twitter as a for profit company. Elon might be ok with this sacrifice and he has the funds to do it. In that I applaud him. The problem is every 10 years there is a new social media phenomena Facebook, Instagram, Twitter... what's next? Does he drop another $50B to buy that? I just don't see this as a problem an engineer can fix. Hence a distraction in resources and focus.

Unfortunately most people are too absorbed in other things to seek the truth and reinforcing their own biases feels good. It feels good because the truth is hard and sometimes gray. Many people are just too lazy to sort through it and prefer black and white tribal solutions.

Conservative forces with something to lose from change (big oil, Russia, China, rich polluters) will continue to finance compelling media that is fantastic and headline grabbing, and they will do what ever it takes to resist the change and promote their agenda.

The voice of the reasonable usually middle ground position is lost.

I can agree with most of your sentiments except that I don't think it encompasses the root cause.

Free speech is not the same as free, mass, real time, worldwide publishing.

When those "rights" or "common values" were established they did not have the the capacity to foresee the consequences and scope of reach of mass, real time, global publishing through the internet. In fact many in that day and age didn't have the capacity to read themselves, let alone owned a book to read, and went to news readings to get an update, sometimes months after it happened, of any notable and world news events.

At that point in time free speech meant your audience was predominantly limited to anybody else that was in earshot of your voice and actually wanted to hear it. Let alone spoke your language or understood you accent.

Those limitations have now been removed, you can reach nearly anyone with a mobile phone, from anywhere on the planet, in real time, with no publishing editor or fact checker, all at the mercy of an algorithm that promotes profitable advertising.

And therin lies the problem, that individuals opinions, "alternative facts" or probable facts, science (which in itself is not in agreement many times- otherwise it wouldn't be science) and individual "realities" all get to express themselves and are published to a huge audience, that then exponentially amplify even the most trivial thing, to something meaningful, all in an effort to advertise products and services that are for sale for currency.

If we insist on having "free" speech it would therefore seem logical that it shouldn't be debased and devalued by the afflictions and affairs of trading coin, and it would be apparent that in it's the current form, we can no longer afford to have free speech at all, because no one is willing to concede its true cost, or accept what it's true value even is.

Although technology has provided us all with this publishing might, which power is akin to a god, in that you can share your thoughts with anyone on the planet, we as a society have yet to fully comprehend the fundamental restructuring that we need, to intentionally promote our combined well being using these tools, instead of being subdued and disoriented by the cresendo of biased noise created for the sake of making money.

As for your concerns as to if buying Twitter is the right way to "engineer" social change, I'm also not sure. I would have thought there might be a better and easier path. But we also don't know what EM knows, or what his ultimate plans are.

Without putting it to a shareholder vote the Twitter board implemented a Poison pill. So Musk is likely going to flush his shares and go to plan B.

You mean freedom to lie and spread conspiracy theories unhindered.

Can't wait for Truth Social?
Any society that can’t survive lies and conspiracy theories, (who decides what is true, anyway?) doesn’t deserve to survive anyway.

If Mr.Musk could keep a fraction of that genius brain of his focused on completing his cybertruck instead of today’s distraction which happens to be twitter. Something new pulls his attention and his money in a different direction every other week or so. I don’t doubt the man can probably do all this crazy stuff.

Musk is not involved in Cybertruck development on a day to day basis. I’m sure he has a lot of input on the project but most of what’s happening now is done by engineers and designers other than musk.
