I just read the story and there is a lot of factors missing here. Accessibility of the vehicle, does the fire department know how to put out EV fires, combustible materials around the vehicle that they needed to put out, etc.

Your question is lacking not just those but is missing the main point. What were they doing in the back seat?!

I think YES, EVERY Fire Department is trained in handling EV fires, or else every one is malfeasantly INCOMPETENT!

One in front "passenger seat", the other in "back seat".

There is a video on YUCKtube wherein an individual is videoing some of the aftermath. From his perspective the distance away does not seem great.

Tiger woods vehicle never burst into flames and it was down an embankment.

We will see, whether "FSD" or "Auto Pilot" was in play. But definetly human error played a part.

I thought if a person never "grabbed/touched" the wheel, after a certain amount of time elapsed, things wouldn't work?

We will see.

think every fire department.... you assume.
Bad to assume.

So every volunteer fire department in every podunk town in North America has the time and money to fund practicing putting out EV fires because it is so inexpensive? Assume because EVs are <2% of all registered vehicles right now in North America that every fire department knows? I work in an ICU and sometimes in the ER. I’ll ask the firefighters next time they bring in a ‘Vic” what training they have had on EVs.
Also, it is easy to circumvent the touch sensor system if you have a rubber band and any weight like a cell phone.

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.

Well, you are correct, bad to assume. With new technologies ongoing, the safety features needed seem to be lacking. Good point.

This may ignite a harder push for Fire Dept's to GET WITH THE TIMES!

They had to call Tesla to find out how to put out the fire. So no they didn't know how. Small town fire department responded to this. My Brother in law was one of the Paramedics who responded. He said the Woods caught on fire to so they spent a lot of time trying to control that.

If you jump in the back seat of any car and it crashes into the woods and catches on fire.. how is that the cars fault?

What no one is talking about is where is the 3rd person. The driver is missing. Were Aliens involved? Is this a cover up of alien abduction? Why don't teslas prevent alien abduction. Why Elon?

@Frankenblob , What's with all the drama??

"Why Elon?????" Really?

Two weeks ago in the town over, a young man hit a tree in a pickup, it went up in flames, he died. Accidents happen. No one is screaming at Ford's board members for "roasting" that young man.

At the risk of sounding like an asshole, and throwing some combustible lithium ion batteries to burn on your post, I'm giving you and your post (n)(n)(n).

As a retired firefighter: Large batteries are very hard to put out with normal means. Understand too, the "off" switch for the battery is likely unknown to the responding unit/s, and/or, it could not be reached by the time the responding unit/s arrived (too much heavy fire in the area of the switch). This is the nature of car fires, and electric cars can be much trickier with their large batteries giving a lot of resistance to current firefighting technology. Also, once the metal begins to burn, a whole other problem occurs in that entirely different means of extinguishing metal from extinguishing electric fires exist. So, VERY tricky.

This all is part of what happens in the level of the transition this world is going through. Normal car fire; hit with water or dry chem extinguisher. These new electric cars, I trained to turn off the power, then fight the fire normally. The switches are located differently and they won't always be accessible. Understand, being driverless, it seems this may have been a test to see what a typical response would be and how they would progress. I could be wrong, but it smells of a test that's pushed by people fighting the EV movement, to incite fear. peace

"god" Elon needs to accept both the good and bad from the company he oversees.

If he doesn't want to be SINGLED/CALLED OUT then he should stop yapping up a storm about all the " great virtues" he claims to bring.

Fame/noteriety is a two-way street, accept both accolades and condemnations and stop being an "only one".

Elon should come out ( and not just say "drivers fault") 1) STOP the Auto pilot and FSD - of which it may come to that by the NHTSA 2) recall those "PINTOS" until a better fire suppressant/ in car safety mechanism exists to curtail the fire ( even if for seconds, minutes...).

Did not look like the surroundings took much Fire damage.

Solid State batteries might be the answer.

By the way, Tesla/Elon claims that the technology they use is "____" safer than the average driver but their data/stats are not privy/open to 3rd party analysis.

Lets learn for the better.

BMW aficionado Bill Macko's 2008 X5 caught fire while parked in his garage in 2015, it destroyed his house.
Roughly a million vehicles of varying models dating back to 2007 have been recalled due to fire risk. The danger has been traced to fuel leaks, overheating wires, short-circuiting heaters, defective exhaust gas recirculation module (EGR coolers).

In November 2016, BMW recalled 136,000 2007–2012 model year U.S. cars for fuel pump wiring problems possibly resulting in fuel leak, fires and engine stalling or restarting issues.

In 2018, BMW recalled 106,000 diesel vehicles in South Korea with a defective exhaust gas recirculation module, which caused 39 engine fires. The recall was then expanded to 324,000 more cars in Europe. Following the recall in South Korea, the government banned cars which had not yet been inspected from driving on public roads. This affected up to 25% of the recalled cars, where the owners had been notified but the cars had not yet been inspected.
** It was reported that BMW KNEW since 2016 that more than 4% of the affected cars in South Korea had experienced failures in the EGR coolers, leading to approximately 20 owners suing the company (30 July 2019). **

2001, BMW announced a recall to refit cars they said had been responsible for two static-related fires while refueling at gas station:
BMW AG said it is recalling all of its new Mini cars sold in Britain to fix a design fault that already has caused two fires — days before the relaunched classic car goes on sale across Europe. The improved grounding is to prevent static electricity from producing a spark when the fuel nozzle is inserted into the gas tank, BMW spokesman Rudolf Probst said. The company blamed static electricity for igniting fuel vapor and causing two small fires, one in a car at a dealership and the other during testing.

BMW Mini Cooper
2011, South Wales resident Karina Collins was driving her Mini Cooper on the M4 when it suddenly lost power. As she pulled over, it became clear that the Coop was on fire. She left all her belongings inside and escaped without harm. The incident was one of four known fire cases stemming from an electrical fault in the turbocharger cooling system. This prompted Mini to make a massive recall of turbocharged models produced between 2007 and 2011. However, in January 2017, a Mini Cooper caught fire in California, and then in August 2017, another burned in Missouri.

January 2012 recall of nearly 89,000 Mini Coopers that might spontaneously catch fire. The culprit is an electronic circuit board on certain turbochargers. The circuit board has the potential to malfunction and ultimately overheat, and the result is a smoldering water pump that may lead to a fire in the vehicle’s engine.

Meh. Cars wreck and catch fire, killing the occupants regularly. Whether you are in a car that is on fire for 5 minutes or 5 hours, you are dead.
Show me that Tesla is worse than industry average, and maybe I'll care more about these sensationalized stories and posts.

A few years ago, late at night, my fire engine was stopped in the fast lane of the freeway attending to an accident, it was a straight away and our emergency lights were on and visible from a long way out. A Tesla ran full speed (no brake application), into the back of the fire engine, causing multiple critical and life threatening injuries to the driver. This of course made national and soon after, international news about the dangers of Tesla.

Wait... No... sorry... My mistake... Instead, it was a possible sleepy driver in a Mazda 3, so no one outside of our town ever heard about it.

Mercedes-Benz is supposed to be one of the most respected car maker, so you would think you could safely buy one of their vehicles without having to worry about it bursting into flames.

Unfortunately, you would be wrong. In 2017, Mercedes-Benz recalled one (1) million cars in response to 51 instances of their vehicles catching fire due to a defective starter motor. In 2015, Mercedes-Benz USA recalled 150,000 E-class and CLS-class vehicles due to a faulty rubber seal in the engine bay that had become a fire hazard. In 2016, a Portland man watched as his C300 caught fire and then exploded just a week after he'd bought it.
