Cybercab Robotaxi Tesla AI Day elon-musk-tesla-cars

Elon Musk announces a date, August 19, for Tesla AI Day, an event to share progress in the automaker’s software and hardware development related to artificial intelligence.

The CEO aims to use the event as a recruiting platform for Tesla’s AI team.

Over the last few years, Tesla started holding events, not really to unveil new products, but to present new technologies that it has been working on in certain fields.

For example, it held a “Tesla Autonomy Day” back in 2019 and a “Tesla Battery Day” last year.

Last month, CEO Elon Musk announced that Tesla will hold a new event called “Tesla AI Day”:

The CEO reiterated that the goal is going to be recruiting AI talent. Musk added: “convincing the best AI talent to join Tesla is the sole goal.”

Therefore, we can expect the presentation not to be easily accessible to the general public and geared toward those already familiar with the AI field.

Tesla’s AI team is led by Andrej Karpathy, who is often presenting at AI conferences. We should expect him to make an appearance at Tesla’s AI Day.

The automaker already has a deep roster of machine learning, computer vision, and neural net specialists, but the recruiting is extremely competitive in those fields.

Tesla hopes to differentiate itself by showing talents that their contributions can quickly lead to real-world applications of AI in Tesla products.

On the software front, Tesla is expected to release updates on its effort to develop neural nets to power its computer vision system.

On the hardware front, Tesla is expected to give an update on its supercomputer program, which is going to lead to Tesla Dojo, an upcoming supercomputer optimized for neural net training.

While the focus is expected to be on self-driving, Tesla could also discuss other applications of AI in its products and operations.

Tesla’s in-house Dojo chip teased by legendary engineer ahead of AI Day

Ahead of Tesla’s AI Day scheduled for August 19th, legendary mechanical engineer Dennis Hong has teased a picture of what could be Tesla’s Dojo Chip. While Dojo is a Supercomputer that Tesla Head of Autonomy Andrej Karpathy released photographs of recently, Dojo uses an in-house chip, according to Elon Musk, along with a computer architecture optimized for Neural Net Training.

Hong, who has been a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles Samueli School of Engineering for several years, has an interest in robotic platforms, autonomous vehicles, and machine design. Interestingly, in 2011, Hong presented a TED Talk about the possibilities of making a car for blind people. During the presentation, Hong told attendees about the DARPA Urban Challenge, where he and his team of engineers developed a fully autonomous car that would automatically reach its destination without intervention. In 2007, when the Urban Challenge was completed, Hong and Co. placed third in the competition, taking home a cool $500,000 prize to continue developing self-driving techniques, among other things.

Hong dished out some added anticipation to Tesla’s AI Day event by sending out a picture of what is likely the in-house chip that Musk talked about in September 2020. “Dojo uses our own chips,” Musk said. Unlike most automakers, Tesla aims to develop most of its software and hardware in-house, especially when it comes to its autonomy projects. While Hong was unwilling to confirm or deny what his professional relationship with Tesla is, his expertise could likely have contributed to the development of Dojo and the autonomous driving project that the company has worked on for years.

Tesla has been developing its own chips since 2016, led by Jim Keller. Ultimately, Tesla wanted to design chips in-house so it knew all of the components and could likely sell the chip to other manufacturers later on. In 2019 at Autonomy Day, it unveiled Hardware 3.0, a chip that Elon Musk said was “objectively the best chip in the world.” Earlier this year, it was rumored that Tesla was working with Samsung to develop a new 5nm semiconductor chip that would assist with autonomous driving software.

Dojo is undoubtedly being developed in-house, but that does not mean Tesla will not attempt to gain the expertise and experience of some of the world’s most intelligent and accomplished engineers. With at least 14 years of experience in the field of self-driving cars, Hong may be the perfect candidate to help Tesla perfect and unveil the future of autonomous driving later this month. At AI Day, it is unknown what will be talked about or released as of right now, but there is obvious speculation that details regarding Tesla’s long-awaited Dojo could be released.

After announcing Dojo last year, Musk and Co. have remained relatively quiet regarding its development, but the company has continuously released updates to its Full Self-Driving Beta suite. Musk says updates will come “every 2 weeks on Friday” at midnight Pacific Standard Time.

Despite Tesla’s development and incremental improvements with nearly every software update, it is nowhere near completed. Instead, the strategy was to transition Tesla’s entire FSD strategy from what Musk called ~2.5D to 4D. Essentially, Musk wanted to transition the FSD Neural Network to a video format. Adding timestamps for more accuracy, the complexity of Dojo is likely something that will not only improve the accuracy of Tesla’s vehicles when FSD and Autopilot are operational, but it also will increase performance at a more drastic rate due to the increased rate of data capture. The massive amount of data that Dojo will comprehend requires one of the world’s strongest and most robust computer systems.

While Tesla hinted toward the release of Dojo late last year, it will not be ready until late 2021 at the earliest. It is unknown if Tesla will unveil Dojo at the event or give a simple progress update.

and I'm sure Wall Street won't hear what they want to hear, and TSLA tanks 8/20
Smells like buying opportunity. Or (I know this is unpopular) the stock price will come back to reality and reflect actual earnings. Current price reflects insane growth opp, but this might be that growth the bet has been on. If so, I don't know if there's "more" growth past that or if this is the adjustment to reality.

Tesla teases future products using artificial intelligence not related to its electric vehicle fleet

In the invite to its AI Day, Tesla is teasing the use of artificial intelligence beyond its electric vehicle fleet.

What do you think they’re talking about?

As we have reported over the last week, Tesla is preparing for its upcoming AI Day on August 19.

Over the last few years, Tesla started holding events, not really to unveil new products, but to present new technologies that it has been working on in certain fields.

For example, it held a Tesla Autonomy Day in 2019 and a Tesla Battery Day last year.

Tesla AI Day is expected to be similar, and CEO Elon Musk said that they will discuss advancements in both AI hardware and software, specifically with the automaker’s new Dojo supercomputer and its neural nets.

Now Tesla has sent out invites to the event and confirmed presentations regarding those technologies, but the most interesting part is that Tesla teased an “inside look” at Tesla’s use of AI in things other than vehicles:

This invite-only event will feature a keynote by Elon, hardware and software demos from Tesla engineers, test rides in Model S Plaid, and more. Attendees will be among the first to see our latest developments in supercomputing and neural network training. They will also get an inside look at what’s next for AI at Tesla beyond our vehicle fleet.
Musk has often hyped Tesla’s AI team as one of the best in the world, but it has always been mostly about the automaker’s self-driving effort.

The automaker has been known to also use AI in non-consumer products, like in its energy software Autobidder, and the automaker has also been extensively using AI in manufacturing.

Gavin Hall, Tesla staff machine learning and controls engineer, describes his work integrating AI in Tesla Gigafactories:

At the Tesla Gigafactory, I develop the supervisory machine learning algorithms used in automated computer vision tasks and the real-time control optimization strategies of factory systems with respect to energy costs, setpoint errors, and equipment downtime.
Our machine vision solutions use deep learning via convolutional neural network variants for classification, detection and segmentation, while our control system cloud architecture combines AI, big data, control theory, and industrial control by leveraging Python to use continuous deep reinforcement learning, model predictive control, state estimation, and recurrent supervised learning models to forecast loads and plan the optimal sequence of control actions sent to PLCs.
That may or may not be what Tesla is hinting at, but we won’t know until August 19.

Electrek’s Take
That’s interesting. It could be some backend applications, but for some reason, I think it could also be related to new consumer products.

When you think about it, if Tesla can truly solve self-driving, it is safe to assume that some of these computer vision developments would apply to other products.

It’s interesting that Tesla is apparently partnering with roboticist Dennis Hong, which could be part of what the automaker is talking about here.

Hong is known for working on humanoid robots, so it would be quite surprising for Tesla to get into that space at this point.

But it wouldn’t be shocking to see Tesla working on some kinds of new robots. Maybe we’ll finally see the Tesla robot snake charger?

This is the kind of article which leads to the stock market dips after the actual event.

How many products came out of battery day? (Hint rhymes with hero)

Products? Like are five factories 'products'? The ability to change production ten-fold?
That’s kind of the stupid bit.

Wall Street sees an announcement like “Battery Day” Or “AI Day” and they want to see something the company can sell Tomorrow.

Tesla teases Dojo supercomputer and partnership with famed roboticist

Tesla is teasing its upcoming new Dojo supercomputer, and famed roboticist Dennis Hong all but confirms that his lab is going to be working with the automaker.

Last month, Elon Musk announced that Tesla will hold an “AI Day” on August 19 to discuss the company’s progress with artificial intelligence to develop self-driving.

The CEO described the event as a recruiting opportunity for the automaker:

Looking at holding Tesla AI Day in about a month or so. Will go over progress with Tesla AI software & hardware, both training & inference. Purpose is recruiting.
On the AI software front, Tesla is expected to give updates on its Tesla Vision computer vision system and all the neural nets it is developing in its self-driving effort.

As for hardware, Tesla is expected to give an update on its supercomputer program, which is going to lead to Tesla Dojo, an upcoming supercomputer optimized for neural net training.

Musk previously revealed that Tesla’s Dojo supercomputer will be capable of an exaFLOP, one quintillion (1018) floating-point operations per second, or 1,000 petaFLOPS – making it one of the most powerful supercomputers on earth.

Now with the invites to the event going out, Tesla is starting to tease Dojo with this image of a module:

t shows a multi-layered module with what appears to be 25 Dojo chips.

The image was shared by Dennis Hong, a famed roboticist who is behind the Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa) at UCLA.

After he posted the image on Twitter, someone asked him if his lab is now associated with Tesla, and Hong all but confirmed it:

Can’t say anything just yet… ??
— Dennis Hong (@DennisHongRobot) August 3, 2021
RoMeLa is famous for its participation in some robotic challenges with a focus on humanoid robots and autonomous driving vehicles.

Here’s the summary of the lab on their website:

The Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory at UCLA is a facility for graduate and undergraduate robotics research and education with an emphasis on studying humanoid robots and novel mobile robot locomotion strategies. Our research interests are in the area of Robot Locomotion & Manipulation, Soft Actuators, Platform Design, Kinematics and Mechanisms, and Autonomous Systems. RoMeLa is also active in research based international robotics competitions winning numerous top prizes including the ‘DARPA Urban Challenge’ (3rd place, $500,000 prize), the international autonomous robot soccer competition ‘RoboCup’ (First Place in both the Kid-Size and Adult-Size Humanoid divisions, World Champions three times in a row, and brought the prestigious ‘Louis Vuitton Cup Best Humanoid Award’ to the United States for the very first time) and most recently being one of the six Track A teams chosen to participate in the disaster response robot competition ‘DARPA Robotics Challenge’ for the $2M top prize.
While the nature of the potential partnership with Tesla is unknown, it could be similar to Tesla’s partnership with Jeff Dahn’s battery lab at Dalhousie University.

Through that partnership, Tesla provides funding to the lab, which in return produces research for the automaker.

It’s also a great recruiting tool for the company, as they often hire from the lab team.

We expect to learn more about this potential partnership on August 19.

MEGHANA KANDRAAUGUST 4, 2021

The most awaited event, Tesla AI day is scheduled to be conducted on August 19, 2021. While Tesla enthusiasts have been looking forward to knowing every little detail about the event. An invite was sent out through Street’s Tesla Daily, and the details show that Hardware and software demos will be shown by Tesla Engineers.

Other interesting things on the invitation about the event include Elon Musk’s keynote and Model S Plaid test drives. Later at the end, it said, “Tesla beyond our vehicle fleet”. Till now it was only known that Tesla’s AI would be for their autonomous cars technology.

The invite is stated as the following,

“Join us in Palo Alto, CA on August 19, 2021, at 5 p.m. PDT. This invite-only event will feature a keynote by Elon, hardware and software demos from Tesla engineers, test rides in Model S Plaid, and more. Attendees will be among the first to see our latest developments in supercomputing and neural network training. They’ll also get an inside look at what’s next for AI at Tesla beyond our vehicle fleet.
If you have received an email invitation for this event, please submit the form below using the same email address to let us know you’d like to attend. Space is limited, and we will be confirming the attendee list closer to the event date. If you are chosen to attend AI Day, you will receive an email confirmation with additional event details.”
Tesla dojo chip
In the invitation, the Tesla Dojo chip can be seen. Before the official invite was out, a legendary mechanical engineer who possibly helped Tesla build the chip, shared the AI chip photo. However, Dennis Hong didn’t make it clear if he was part of the team or just came to know about it. However, the chip released by Hong is the same one sent out by Tesla.

It is possible that the Dojo chip can do much more than just being used in the Tesla fleet. There are unlimited possibilities of what Tesla has in store for its customers and the AI world. Earlier through conferences when the director of AI and autopilot at Tesla talked about Dojo. It is known that Tesla plans to open its Supercomputer to other companies too.

The event will be held in Palo Alto on August 19, 2021, at 5:00 pm PST. Details like if the event will be done independently. Last year battery event was done together with the annual shareholder meeting.
